Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
The Counter-Strike series has been around since the year 2000, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is the fourth in the series and the most popular. The game sees two teams face off against each other: the Terrorists and the Counter-Terrorists. The aim of the game is to eliminate the other and in some cases, the Terrorists, need to plant a bomb, while the Counter-Terrorists have to prevent the bomb from being planted or defuse the bomb. The biggest esports events for CS:GO include the majors, ESL leagues and the Masters World Championship in Katowice.
League of Legends
League of Legends is a team strategy game where players can choose from over 140 characters or "champions", and then two teams battle it out to destroy the other's base. Some of the biggest LOL leagues and tournaments include the World Championship, the Mid-Season Invitational and the League of Legends Championship Series.
Dota 2 (Defense of the Ancients) is played in matches between two teams of five players, with each side occupying an "Ancient" which is an old building or structure on the map. Each player controls a character, called a "hero", and their main goal is to destroy the Ancient that belongs to the opposing team. Valve (the game publisher) manages the Dota Pro Circuit; a series of tournaments that award qualification points to get invitations to "The International", the game's foremost annual competition. Dota 2 was released in 2013 – 10 years after the original Dota game was released.
Call of Duty
Call of Duty is a first-person shooter video game series which began back in 2003, and as of 2020, it is still going strong with 16 releases. It initially centred around games set in World War II. However, in the past decade or so, games have taken place in the Cold War, the future and even in outer space. In the Call of Duty League; players can compete against each other from Europe and North America playing the most recent release, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare. There are often tournaments throughout the year as part of the league with prize pools of over $1 million.
FIFA has been the most popular football game for over 25 years now, and it comes as no surprise that it's the most popular esport when it comes to sports games – it is even popular with footballers themselves! FIFA has online clubs in which you can create your own personalised player and join a team to compete against others. The ultimate team mode is a popular mechanic that allows you to create a team using past and present players. However, the traditional way of picking a team and playing against an online opponent is still very popular amongst FIFA fans.
