This weekend’s biggest Bundesliga clash sees Dortmund host arch-rivals Schalke at the Westfalenstadion behind closed doors for the 155th Revierderby.
On the ascendancy
Dortmund are in good form in the Bundesliga at the moment, and they recorded an impressive 1-2 away win last week against fellow title contenders Borussia Monchengladbach. However, it has been five long years since Dortmund tasted victory against their bitter rivals here and if they don’t win, it will be even more of an uphill task to win the Bundesliga. You can get odds of 1.39 for a Dortmund triumph. BVB also have to recover from their midweek Champions League loss to PSG. After taking a 2-1 lead to Paris; they lost 2-0 and were knocked out of the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Schalke can’t buy a win at the moment, and they haven’t won in their previous seven league games. Their last win was on the 17th of January against Monchengladbach. They’d like nothing more than to derail Dortmund’s title bid, and they have plenty of reasons to be optimistic as they have a pretty impressive record on Dortmund’s home turf. A Schalke win is currently at 7.50.
The overall H2H is fairly even with a lot of recent encounters ending in draws. Schalke managed an impressive 2-4 win here last season, but a similar outcome is highly unlikely. Current form certainly favours Dortmund, but in football and especially local derbies - form often goes out the window. It’s hard to look past Dortmund for this one, but Schalke will look to take advantage of the downbeat Dortmund team after their midweek loss to PSG. Schalke’s main problem is scoring goals; their top scorer this season is midfielder Suat Serdar with seven goals. Their top-scoring striker is Benito Raman with a measly four goals. Signing a top striker is undoubtedly their main priority for next season if they are to return to being Champions League regulars. Schalke are at 2.50 to score exactly zero goals.
Dortmund: Marco Reus.
Schalke: Suat Serdar, Benjamin Stambouli, Salif Sane, Ozan Kabak and Omar Mascarell.
