EURO 2020 - football qualification

EURO 2020 - qualifications for the football competition

In 12 months we will know who has won the European Championships, and with just under ten months to go before the start of the football competition there has never been a better time to put your bet on for the winner of the historical competition with STS. The competition will celebrate its 60th birthday next summer, and with that came the decision to have 12 different host cities. The semi-finals and final will be played in London at Wembley, while there will also be fixtures throughout the competition in St Petersburg, Copenhagen, Munich and Bucharest to name a few.

The qualification for the football competition is still ongoing, but at this halfway stage many of the biggest countries will be taking part in the tournament next year. The Nations League also offered another route to qualify, which offers teams a back-up option should they not pass through their respective qualification groups. Portugal will be the defending champions next summer, but the competition couldn’t be more open, and there will be at least five teams that will be vying for their crown. But, which sides should punters be keeping a closer eye on ahead of the competition beginning in June 2020?

EURO 2020: Germany

Germany have long been a country that have turned up when the stakes couldn’t be bigger, but their reputation took a hammering at the 2018 World Cup as they crashed out at the group stages after finishing bottom of their group. Life for Joachim Lowe hasn’t been made any easier since that disaster with rumblings of discontent threatening to derail any hope of them getting back on track. However, the retirements of Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira and the instalment of youth players into the setup has had a strong effect.

They have begun their qualification campaign with three straight wins and have scored 13 goals in the process. The pick of these results was their 3-2 success in Amsterdam against the Netherlands. The Dutch had relegated them in the Nations League just a few months prior, and the attitude of the Germans was much improved in the significant win. Germany will remain a team to beat in next summer’s competition, and the quality that they have all over the pitch will ensure that they at least improve on their showing from the World Cup.

EURO 2020: France

The current World Cup holders will once again be the heavy favourites to win another major competition. Despite not qualifying for the finals of the Nations League, the gloss hasn’t been taken off their dominant performances in the Russian showpiece event. There is quality wherever you look on their team, and with Kylian Mbappe only improving season upon season, there is a high chance that the forward could be a front runner for the Balon d’Or in 2020. The relationship between himself and Antoine Griezmann was one of the many reasons why they were able to flourish in Russia, while the midfield pairing of N’golo Kante and Paul Pogba offers both defensive and offensive qualities.

Between now and the start of the 2020 Euros there will also be additional playing time for players looking to manufacture their way into the side. With players like Anthony Martial, Adrien Rabiot and Thomas Lemar all looking to build on disappointing seasons in 2018-19. Defensively there aren’t many better teams on the planet, and if they can keep their La Liga duo of Samuel Umtiti and Rafael Varane fit then, there could be no stopping France from winning a second consecutive major honour on the international stage.

EURO 2020: England

It has been a long time since the Three Lions achieved a success in an international tournament, and there is a feeling that England are building momentum steadily since their appearance in the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time in nearly 20 years. The number of young players that are coming through would certainly give Gareth Southgate a lot to think about, while in Harry Kane they have undoubtedly one of the best strikers in the world.

It would seem that England have already learnt their lessons from the disappointing semi-final defeat against Croatia, with a famous success of Spain in Bilbao and another penalty shootout success against Switzerland proving that. The famous penalty hoodoo that has hung over England throughout their runs in major competitions seems to have finally been lifted, and with more youthful quality expected to catch the eye across Europe this season, it could be coming home. Players such as Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford will all likely be given crucial roles in Southgate’s side, while Raheem Sterling is having the season of his life under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. They could be good omens, but England fans will not be confident until they have achieved a success.

EURO 2020: Spain

The Spanish achieved back-to-back successes in the competition in 2008 and 2012; in between their first-ever World Cup triumph. However, since 2012 there have been consistent disappointments for the Spanish on the national stage. Their 2018 competition epitomised that as they fired their manager a day before the competition starting and then crashed out against Russia on penalties having failed to turn their possession into clear goalscoring opportunities.

Since being knocked out of the World Cup they have appointed Robert Moreno as their head coach, but there is still a sense that the team are underachieving and that was very much the case in the Nations League. In the group stages, they looked certainties to qualify for the finals after wins over England and Croatia. However, they rested on their laurels, and the defeat against England in Spain effectively meant that they would have to settle for a second-place finish. This could be the final competition that we see long-term members of the national team such as Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique and David Silva in a national competition and they will be hoping to go out with a bang after being part of one of the most successful national sides that the country has ever produced.
