2019 Copa Libertadores winners Flamengo take on UEFA Champions League winners Liverpool in the final of the 2019 Club World Cup.
Flamengo’s path to the final has been a dramatic one. Scoring two goals in the final moments of the 2019 Copa Libertadores Final after being 0-1 down to River Plate of Argentina is something fans of the team will remember for a lifetime. They defeated Saudi Arabian team Al-Hilal 3-1 in the semi-finals (of the CWC) to get here. Flamengo currently have odds of 4.75 on the STS website to get a surprise win.
An extraordinary year
Liverpool’s path has been equally as dramatic. Coming back from the brink in last season’s Champions League after being 0-3 down against Barcelona and ending up as 4-3 winners in their semi-final matchup. Liverpool went on to defeat fellow English side Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final to make this season’s Club World Cup. A close 2-1 win against Monterrey in the semi-finals here sealed their place to meet Flamengo in the final. STS have odds of 1.55 for Liverpool to cap a fantastic 2019.
Liverpool are undoubtedly the firm favourites for this one, but this match is far from a foregone conclusion. Despite boasting more star players, this match will be seen by Liverpool as relatively minor compared to other games in the season. For Flamengo, this could be their biggest match of the season, and they will take hope from Liverpool’s struggles in their semi-final fixture where they needed an injury-time Roberto Firmino goal to send them through. This is not the first time that these two teams have met. Both Flamengo and Liverpool also contested the Intercontinental Cup in 1981 which was similar to the Club World Cup. Led by Brazillian legend Zico, Flamengo claimed a comfortable 3-0 win. Flamengo are used to playing attacking football under their Portuguese manager Jorge Jesus, and it will be interesting to see if they have the same approach against a team like Liverpool - a step-up in quality in comparison to their usual opponents.
Liverpool: Fabinho, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren. Virgil Van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum will have late fitness tests.
With Liverpool potentially having a few defenders missing, it’s entirely likely that Flamengo will grab a goal and make things interesting, but still expect Liverpool to pull through and win. Our betting tip is for Liverpool to win and both teams to score at odds of 2.54.
